Wakefield set off a public health time bomb in 1998 with a paper released in The Lancet that declared the joint MMR vaccine might be the reason for rising varieties of autism cases. He provided no causal mechanism but required usage of the triple vaccine to be suspended until further research might be done. However, other scientists were never able to duplicate the results. ‘We welcome to the government’s aspiration – it is right that we must intend to be one of the best places worldwide to deliver. ‘Maternity services have improved considerably over recent years but there are still areas where the UK drags comparable nations. ‘The poor standards revealed by the Morecambe Bay query revealed there is no cause for complacency. Much safer services are the result of much better team effort – medical professionals and midwives have to develop strong and safe groups with shared regard, backed by high quality training and support. Nothing less is appropriate.’ To see present and forthcoming hearings see the MPTS physical fitness to practise hearings calendar.
