New prisoners need to have health evaluation before entering cells, states Nice

The National Institute for Health and Care Quality (Good) stated that all new prisoners should be offered a health assessment when they come to a jail reception. The health authority has set out a study for new inmates which includes as much as 50 concerns for each person going into the jail system. The study, set out in a draft standard, consists of questions about a person’s physical health, mental health, alcohol use and substance abuse. They consist of concerns about whether female inmates are pregnant and whether prisoners have any special medical diets. If an individual has been accuseded of murder or murder, they must be referred for an urgent mental health evaluation and be seen by a GP while they are in reception, it said.
